PROJECT 1
HIGH RISE BUILDING AT TAYLOR'S
brief
To identify the basic principles, processes and equipment of various building services systems found in buildings. To understand the integration of various building services systems in a building and statutory requirements.
outcome
A3 sized report consisting of cover page, table of contents, introduction to assignment and task, drawings, proposal of building services system (individual) and references list
In a hypothetical scenario, to cater for the incredibly high number of students, the management of the University have decided to build a high-rise building which consists of basement parking, classrooms and students’ accommodation, complete with the building’s own central air-conditioning system, active and passive fire-protection system, mechanical ventilation system and mechanical transportation system. However, due to other expansion plans of the University there is only limited land area to site the new building. Additionally, the management requires the new building to resemble the existing academic blocks, hence minimal architectural design activities are required. The high-rise building will be located next to Block E, occupying a portion of the existing open car park, with the same plinth area as Block E.
In a group of 5, we were to conduct precedent studies on buildings with similar type, height, use, etc. to understand the related building services systems used.
With taking Block E as reference in terms of the plinth area and envelope design, the group is required to produce a schematic design of a high-rise building, including the spaces related to the building services system (i.e., plant room, AHU room and lift core), which consists of the following:
• 1 floor of shop units – 1 A3 size floor plan drawing
• 12 floors of classrooms and lecture theatres – 1 A3 size typical floor plan drawing
• 7 floors of student accommodation (hostel) – 1 A3 size typical floor plan drawing
• 5 floors of carpark, including 3 basement floors below LG level – 1 A3 size floor plan drawing for LG level and 1 A3 size typical floor plan for basement floor
• A roof plan – 1 A3 size plan drawing
• 2 elevations
Then, we were to propose the building services systems for the high-rise building where each group member is required to individually work on the proposal, with me working on passive fire protection system.
