We were tasked to design a Memory Repository that serves the purposes of providing a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence of the site and accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.

1. Propose a design scheme which response to the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), functional program and user experiences

2. Generate design through conscious consideration of human scale, natural light, materials/ texture (user experience)

3. Develop design work by integrating structural system, buildability in construction, passive design strategies, and thermal comfort considerations

Narrative

Machap Baru is known for its unique culture and community. A memory repository serves as a place to celebrate those aspects and a way to give back to the people. Located at the centre of the town itself, the mostly unused area can be revitalised and be a stepping stone to more opportunities. It acts as a space for visitors to experience the essence of Machap Baru and a cultural centre for the townsfolk as well.

The programs of the memory repository relate to the abandoned community and reading center as well as the nearby timber building. The abandoned center is framed in the archive space, which refects it as a successor to the ruin and serves the same purpose of education. The timber building also acts as an artifact for the gallery and  reinforces the identity of the town through historical architecture. These structures add to the factor of nostalgia as both have a long history in the town so it is ingrained into the memories of the residents.

The addition of other spaces also contributes to express and showcase the very identity of Machap Baru itself through the use of locations for cultural events, gastronomy and galleries. Although the spaces do not have clear organisation, they are still directly connected to each other and allows the user to move through the spaces and experience what Machap Baru has to offer.
