PROJECT 2A

GENIUS LOCI

site analysis & concept development

brief

group

To conduct a historical research on macrosite. To collect data using maps, sketches, drawings, photography, videography, audio recordings, models etc. To conduct site analysis of the physical context within the identified macro and micro site/s.

individual

To generate design through conscious consideration of spatial typologies, section-plan relationship, contextual conditions and considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures.

outcome

group

10-12 A3 sized panels including A set of site analysis diagrams of both macro and micro sites in PDF format

1 A1 sized panel of axonometric projection drawing in PDF format

5-10 minutes of video documentation of identified/ selected ‘theme’ with verbal narration

individual

1 A3 sized panel of hand sketches/diagrams/graphics/paintings to interpret the key character of place, completed with annotations/captions to explain interpretations

4 A3 sized panels of hand-drawn/digital produced plans and section(s) at an appropriate scale

Write-up of not more than 300 words (12 points type size) to be included on one of A3 panels

Group Project

In a group of 12-13 from the same tutorial group, we were assigned to conduct historical research, collect and record data  on the following:

  • Orientation (sun path)

  • Climate (rainfall & temperature)

  • Site contours

  • Adjacent street and vehicular traffic patterns

  • Pedestrian circulation

  • Neighbouring contexts

  • Vegetation

  • Views from & to & through the site

  • Noise

  • Human-Cultural

Based on the collected data and information, we were to conduct site analysis of the physical context within the macrosite and ruins and reservoir microsites. We then had to produce an axonometric projection drawing of the macrosite and a video about the in-depth historical background of the site including a timeline of historical events, documentation of history, a series of plans/ historical tracings of the town morphology.

Individual Project

We were tasked to produce a personal interpretation of the macrosite of Machap Baru in the form of sketches which  will inform subsequent design decisions. Also, to identify the key character(s) of place that would form inspiration in the design, and then present a design concept for a Memory Repository derived from the issues discovered. The design concept should take into consideration of the microsite surroundings, respond to the adjacent tangible elements, then be presented in the form of drawings. I chose to place my structure in the ruins microsite as it contained historical buildings that can showcase the heritage identity of the town as well as its centralized location acting as the 'heart' of Machap Baru.

Narrative

Machap Baru is known for its unque culture and community. A memort repository serves as a place to celebrate those aspects and a way to give back to the people. Located at the centre of the town itself, the mostly unused area can be revitalised and be a stepping stone to more opportunities. It acts as a space for visitors to experience the essesnce of Machap Baru and a cultural centre for the townsfolk as well.

The memory repository also incorporates the abandoned community and reading center and through restoration it can serve its purpose once again. This adds to the factor of nostalgia as the structure has a long history in the town so it os ingrained into the memories of the residents. It also acts as a historical artifact and can combat the issue of abandonment that many buildings in Machap Baru face.

The addition of other spaces also contributes to express and showcase the very identity of Machap Baru itself through the use of locations for cultural events, gastronomy and galleries. Although the spaces do not have clear organisation, they are still directly connected to each other and allows the user to move through the spaces and experience what Machap Baru has to offer.
